Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) ice water
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Make the pastry: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form it into a disk, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the apple filling: In a medium bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, flour, and nutmeg. Set aside to let the flavors meld.
  3. Roll out the pastry: On a floured surface, roll the chilled dough into a rectangle approximately 12×8 inches (30×20 cm). Transfer the pastry to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Assemble the Kringle: Spoon the apple filling down the center of the pastry, leaving about 2 inches on each side. Fold the sides over the filling, overlapping slightly. Pinch the ends to seal.
  5. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the Kringle for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbling.
  6. Prepare the glaze: While the Kringle cools slightly, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl. Drizzle the glaze over the warm Kringle.
  7. Cool and serve: Let the Kringle cool on a rack for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Keep the butter cold for flaky pastry. Adjust the sweetness of the apple filling based on the apples’ natural sweetness. Cover the edges with foil if they brown too quickly during baking.
