  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat pastry flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup Christmas M&Ms (red & green)
  • Extra M&Ms for topping (optional)
  • Flaky sea salt for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang for easy removal, or coat with nonstick spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating until incorporated. Mix in vanilla extract and scrape down the bowl.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing on low speed or by hand until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips and Christmas M&Ms with a spatula. Dough will be thick.
  7. Spread dough evenly in prepared pan. Press extra M&Ms on top for festive color.
  8. Bake for 22-26 minutes, until edges are golden and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Remove pan from oven and cool on a rack for at least 1 hour. Sprinkle flaky sea salt if desired.
  10. Lift bars out using parchment overhang. Slice into squares or rectangles with a sharp knife or bench scraper. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

For gluten-free bars, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. For dairy-free, substitute plant-based butter and dairy-free chocolate chips. Do not overmix the dough for best texture. Cool bars completely before slicing for neat squares. Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
