Layers of tender sweet potatoes smothered in a velvety cream sauce and crowned with a golden, bubbly cheese topping. Perfect for cozy dinners or festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or sharp cheddar cheese
  • Fresh thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into thin, even rounds (about ⅛-inch thick).
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the heavy cream and milk, then whisk in the salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Heat the mixture until warm but not boiling, then set aside.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  5. Arrange the sweet potato slices in overlapping layers in the baking dish.
  6. Pour the warm cream mixture evenly over the layered sweet potatoes, ensuring it coats every slice. Use a spatula to spread it if needed.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top. If using fresh thyme, scatter it over the cheese.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 20-25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  9. Let the dish cool for about 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

[‘Choose firm, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes for the best texture and flavor.’, ‘Thin, even slices ensure the potatoes cook evenly.’, ‘Use high-quality cheese like Gruyère or sharp cheddar for better flavor.’, ‘Allow the dish to sit for 5-10 minutes after baking to let the sauce thicken.’]
