A vibrant and balanced Hurricane cocktail featuring fresh passion fruit juice, light and dark rum, and a hint of cinnamon simple syrup. Perfect for sunny afternoons and casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) Light Rum (e.g., Bacardi)
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Dark Rum (e.g., Myers’s)
  • 3 oz (90 ml) Fresh Passion Fruit Juice (strained from ripe passion fruits or high-quality bottled juice)
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Fresh Lime Juice (about one medium lime)
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Simple Syrup (equal parts sugar and water, simmered with a cinnamon stick for 5 minutes, optional but recommended)
  • 2 oz (60 ml) Orange Juice (freshly squeezed if possible)
  • ½ oz (15 ml) Grenadine Syrup
  • Ice Cubes (plenty for shaking and serving)
  • Garnishes: orange slices, maraschino cherries, and a sprig of fresh mint (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut 3-4 ripe passion fruits in half and scoop out the pulp into a fine mesh strainer set over a bowl. Press gently with a spoon to extract about 3 oz (90 ml) juice, discarding seeds and pulp.
  2. Make cinnamon simple syrup (optional): In a small saucepan, combine ½ cup sugar and ½ cup water with a cinnamon stick. Heat until sugar dissolves, then simmer for 5 minutes. Cool and remove cinnamon stick.
  3. Squeeze 1 medium lime and enough oranges to collect 2 oz (60 ml) fresh juice. Remove any seeds.
  4. Add 2 oz light rum, 1 oz dark rum, 3 oz passion fruit juice, 1 oz lime juice, 2 oz orange juice, 1 oz simple syrup, and ½ oz grenadine into a cocktail shaker.
  5. Fill the shaker halfway with ice cubes. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until the shaker feels frosty and cold.
  6. Fill a hurricane glass with fresh ice. Strain the cocktail mixture over the ice, ensuring no pulp or seeds get through.
  7. Garnish with an orange slice, a maraschino cherry, and a sprig of fresh mint. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use fresh passion fruit juice for best flavor; bottled 100% juice can be used as a substitute. Adjust sweetness by reducing simple syrup and adding more lime juice if desired. Large clear ice cubes melt slower and keep the drink from diluting quickly. Pre-make cinnamon simple syrup and store in fridge up to two weeks. For less sweet version, halve the simple syrup. Garnish thoughtfully for aroma and presentation.
