Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Garlic powder (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine 1 cup (240ml) warm water, 2 teaspoons sugar, and 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and the activated yeast mixture. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let it rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the breadsticks: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin stick and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Second rise: Cover the shaped breadsticks with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Add the butter: While the breadsticks are still warm, brush them generously with melted butter. Sprinkle with garlic powder and parsley, if desired.

Notes

Warm water is key for activating the yeast. Customize the toppings with garlic butter, Parmesan, or herbs for added flavor. Breadsticks are best served fresh and warm.
