  • 2 tablespoons (25 g) granulated sugar
  • Zest of one large orange (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups (480 ml) of milk and 1/4 cup (60 ml) of heavy cream. Heat over medium-low until warm, but not boiling.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons (10 g) of cocoa powder, 1/4 cup (50 g) of dark chocolate chips, and 2 tablespoons (25 g) of granulated sugar to the saucepan. Whisk continuously to dissolve the cocoa powder and melt the chocolate.
  3. Stir in the zest of one large orange (about 1 tablespoon) and 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) of vanilla extract. Add a pinch of salt to balance the flavors.
  4. Continue whisking and heating the mixture until it reaches your desired temperature. Avoid boiling to keep the texture creamy.
  5. Taste and adjust the sweetness, adding more sugar if needed.
  6. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream, additional orange zest, chocolate shavings, or your favorite garnish.
