This easy homemade treat combines classic puppy chow with chopped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing snack mix. Quick to make and perfect for parties, gifting, or movie nights, each bite delivers the irresistible flavors of chocolate and peanut butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 cups Rice Chex cereal (or Corn Chex)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (about 18 regular-size cups, chopped into quarters or use minis)
  • 1/2 cup Reese’s Pieces (optional)

Instructions

  1. Set out a large mixing bowl, microwave-safe bowl, spatula, and zip-top bags. Measure all ingredients before starting.
  2. Add chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter to the microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring after each, until melted and smooth (about 1–2 minutes). Alternatively, melt in a saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly.
  3. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Place Rice Chex cereal in the large mixing bowl. Pour the melted chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Gently fold with a spatula until all pieces are coated (about 2–3 minutes).
  5. Transfer coated cereal into a gallon-size zip-top bag. Add powdered sugar, seal the bag, and shake until all pieces are evenly coated and no sticky spots remain. Alternatively, use a large bowl with a lid and shake or toss gently.
  6. Pour puppy chow back into the mixing bowl. Add chopped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Reese’s Pieces. Gently toss to combine.
  7. Spread snack mix onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let cool and set for about 10 minutes.
  8. Once cooled, transfer to an airtight container or zip-top bags. Store at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Notes

For gluten-free, use gluten-free Chex and check all mix-ins. Melt chocolate slowly to avoid seizing. Don’t skimp on powdered sugar for best texture. Mix gently to avoid crushing cereal and Reese’s cups. Double the recipe for parties, but work in batches for even coating. Puppy chow can be frozen for up to 2 months.
