Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Food coloring (optional): orange, black, and green
  • Royal icing
  • Sprinkles or edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter and 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes). Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  2. Gradually add 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt to the butter mixture, mixing just until a soft dough forms. Avoid overmixing to maintain a tender texture.
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to firm up.
  4. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use Halloween-themed cookie cutters to cut out shapes, then transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Let them cool completely before decorating.
  6. Prepare royal icing and divide it into bowls. Add food coloring to create spooky Halloween hues, then use piping bags to decorate your cookies. Add sprinkles or edible glitter for extra flair!

Notes

Chilling the dough is essential for maintaining precise shapes after baking. Use gel food coloring for vibrant shades without altering the icing texture. Take your time with decorating for the best results.
